SBC/CIR/157/2021
22nd September 2021

Dear Members and Pupils of Selangor Bar,

Members would have received the Notice to call for the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Malaysian Bar (“EGM”) Circular No. 359/2021 as well as access to download the motions in Circular No. 374/2021.

The EGM will be held online and conducted virtually and members are advised to register by 5.00pm this Thursday, 23 September 2021. Please register by clicking on this link.

The Selangor Bar Committee implores all members to attend and take part in this EGM as the motions tabled will be of significant importance.

The Selangor Bar Committee had an agreement signed with LexisNexis Malaysia on 19th December 2017 for a term of three years and two months (19.12.2019 to 28.2.2021) whereby members were given access to Lexis Malaysia Base Package, Malayan Law Journal Reported, Malayan Law Journal Unreported, Malayan Law Journal Articles, Unannotated statutes of Malaysia and LexRead Malaysian Ebooks Digital Publications. The cost then translated to RM60.00 per member per annum.

This was renewed via an agreement signed on 12th March 2021 for a term of two years (1.3.2021 to 28.2.2023) for Lexis Advance, Malayan Law Journal Reported, Malayan Law Journal Unreported, Malayan Law Journal Articles, Unannotated statutes of Malaysia and LexRead Malaysian Ebooks Digital Publications (updated as at 2017) (“the existing Selangor Bar LexisNexis package”). The cost translates to RM63.00 per member per annum of which Selangor Bar is subsidizing the amount of RM3.00 per member per annum.

The first motion in the agenda for the EGM relates to subscription for LexisNexis Legal Research Products for all members of the Bar but specifically carves out Selangor Bar due to the current existing agreement dated 12th March 2021. Members are therefore advised to read and understand this particular motion that will be tabled at the EGM, appreciate the difference in terms of the LexisNexis Legal Research Products offered via the motion and the existing Selangor Bar LexisNexis Advance package, take part in discussions and make an informed decision when voting.

The Malaysian Bar requires a two thirds affirmative vote in favour of any legal research database motion in order to proceed with any proposed subscription and as such your voice and your vote matters.

Thank you.

Kokila Vaani Vadiveloo
Chairman
Selangor Bar Committee
